Are you conscious about your teeth? Healthy teeth and gums contribute more than just a beautiful smile – it is also an important component of overall dental health. Every day, medical travellers ask us about affordable alternatives for improving their smiles and confidence. One of the great news is that dental procedures have improved over the last 15 years. As a result, there are a lot of destinations to avail of these – one of which is Mexico.
There are a wide array of clinics and packages to choose from when you visit the cities of Los Algodones, Tijuana, Mexicali and Tecate. Here at Mexico Border Dentist, we compiled a list of the most availed dental procedures and their corresponding prices so we can help you identify which dental procedures are best for your needs and budget.
Teeth Whitening or Bleaching. Teeth Whitening works to eliminate unwanted tooth stains and discoloration caused by nicotine, caffeine and other factors. Most teeth whitening are performed in the dentist’s office or through dental whitening kits using peroxide-based bleaching agents. Most dentists use 15% to 43% peroxide while easy to use whitening kits contain from 3% – 20% peroxide (either carbamide or hydrogen peroxide). Usually, whitening or bleaching treatment may cost $195-$325 in Mexico, while in the US, it can cost you $2,300. What bleaching won’t do to your teeth is that it cannot whiten composite tooth-colored bondings and porcelain crowns.
Dental Fillings (Composites). Fillings work to repair or fill holes made by cavities. They still belong to the most common procedures performed by dentists. Before, metallic amalgam fillings are used but because they cause teeth darkening and damage when placing them, most dental clinics have stopped using such and have replaced it with composite fillings. Composite or resin fillings are adhesively placed to the walls of the teeth and they come in shades that easily blend in with the color of your teeth – thus achieving a more natural look. Dental fillings in Mexican clinics only cost $30- $95 while in the US, it can cost you $105.
Root Canal Treatment. A root canal treatment saves teeth from build-up of pus (formation of abscess that can cause infection and pain) and tooth extraction. It involves the removal of the pulp (thread-like tissue at the center of the tooth), then the dental space is shaped, cleaned and filled. You may consider a root canal treatment if you have a deep cavity or injury and cracked teeth that was infected. Clinics in Mexico offer root canal treatment for only $180 while back home, you can avail of the treatment for $700.
Tooth Extraction. It involves the removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone. Extracting teeth may give you a traumatic experience but it is only considered as the last resort by your dentist. There are a myriad of reasons for extraction and among which is a tooth damaged by decay, the presence of impacted wisdom teeth (usually performed in the early twenties or late teens), application of orthodontic braces (to make room for the other teeth to move in place) or extra tooth that blocks the other teeth from approaching in. Whatever your reasons are, usually your dentist may have performed other options such as filling a tooth, placing a crown or other dental treatment. Teeth extractions can cost you around $75- $212 compared to $228 per tooth.
Dental braces. They are appliances used in orthodontics that work to straighten and align teeth and position them to correct a person’s bite, specifically underbites, overbites, deep bites and malocclusions, along with crooked teeth and various flaws of the jaw and teeth. Braces can be either structural or cosmetic and are used in conjunction with other appliances to widen the palate and to assist in shaping the jaws and the teeth. Dental braces can cost $586 – $2,800 in Mexico while it can cost as high as $5,000 – $6,000 in the US.
